Matt Wilson
Matt Wilson has been performing magic since 1992, when he was ten years old. He works out of Birmingham, Alabama, and he performs every booking himself.
He moved to Birmingham in 2008 and named the act The Magic City Magician, after the city’s own nickname. The name stuck, and he registered it as a trademark.
The work divides three ways. Close-up and strolling magic, where the trick happens in someone else’s hands. Corporate shows built on mentalism, for companies that have sat through enough forgettable evenings. And family shows for all ages, which is the phrase that matters, because the adults laugh as hard as the children do.
What 34 years buys
Mostly it buys judgement. Knowing which trick belongs in a loud room and which one needs quiet. Knowing when a group of eight has become a group of thirty and the act has to change shape. Reading a room is not a trick, and it is the part that cannot be bought in a shop.
There is no roster here and no subcontractor. The person you book is the person who turns up.
Sixty miles from Birmingham is included in the price, which covers Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Mountain Brook and Trussville. Beyond that he still travels, with the travel cost added to the quote — as far as three hours out, for the right event.
